Vodafone's Data Driver

11:40 AM -- Just as Ericsson AB (Nasdaq: ERIC) was proclaiming that the mobile sector's "fundamentals for longer-term positive development... remain solid," and citing increasing mobile data traffic volumes as an example, Vodafone Group plc (NYSE: VOD) was unveiling its fiscal first-quarter key performance indicators (KPIs), which backed up the Swedish vendor's views. (See Services Save Ericsson in Q2.)

Vodafone, which now has 315.3 million customers worldwide, reported a 19.4 percent year-on-year increase in data service revenues to £888 million (US$1.46 billion) in the three months to the end of June. (See Vodafone Reports Q1 KPIs.)

Total revenues increased 9.3 percent to £10.74 billion ($17.65 billion), though the operator noted that without the impact of currency exchange rate changes, and discounting the boost to sales from recent acquisitions, like-for-like ("organic") service revenues would have been down by 2.1 percent.
