VMware Flies

4:30 PM -- It's VMware Inc. (NYSE: VMW)'s week. They've gone public, wowed the market, rung the opening bell... They're having a good time. (See VMware IPO Nearly Doubles the Goal and The Other Side of VMware's IPO.)

Today's Mercury News touches briefly on whether VMware's rise is good for future IPOs, but that's not a fair comparison. VMware differs from your usual startup in so many ways:
  • Well established business with annual sales in the hundreds of millions
  • Parent company worth tens of billions
  • Female CEO
  • Profits

Well, we've found 10 companies that definitely score zero on the first three items, and a lot of them don't rank in the fourth one, either. But we're still figuring some of them to go public, if not get bought first. Yes, we've finally revamped Light Reading's Top Ten Private Companies, and you can click that link to see the results.

C'mon, you know you want to see if Calix Inc. (NYSE: CALX) and Force10 Networks Inc. are still there...
