Verizon on Bandwidth

11:30 AM -- How much bandwidth will we need in the next five years?

Here's what Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE: VZ) CTO Mark Wegleitner said in response to that question when Light Reading interviewed him last month:

I think 100 megabits per second is a reasonable objective for the next three to five years… of course, the theory here is that there are a few applications out there that could conceivably do that, especially when you crank up five or six PCs in a single household that want to do, you know, data streaming or something like that. But the thing is, all the experience we have in the computing industry is that applications will expand and fill any available vacuum, right? It happened on PC hard drives and CPUs… so I mean transmission is undoubtedly going to follow the same track. I think that’s only going to make for a much richer and more entertaining experience and that’s a good thing for all of us.
