T-Mobile Boasts Subscriber Growth
The mobile operator's parent, Deutsche Telekom AG (NYSE: DT), released key performance indicators today ahead of its fourth-quarter earnings report scheduled for later next month. (See DT Boasts Growth.)
The biggest contributor to T-Mobile's customer growth last year was T-Mobile US Inc. . The U.S. subsidiary had 28.7 million customers at the end of last year, which is an increase of 14.6 percent compared to the end of 2006. In the fourth quarter alone, T-Mobile recorded 951,000 net additions, of which 733,000 were on contract subscriptions. T-Mobile attributes the strong subscriber growth to attractive new products -- like MyFaves and the iPhone -- and new tariffs. (See Table 1.)
In Germany, T-Mobile has sold 70,000 iPhones with T-Mobile contracts. The MyFaves calling plan gained 100,000 customers by the end of the year since it was launched in October in Germany. MyFaves has been available in the U.S. for longer and had 5 million customers by the end of the year. (See Schnell! T-Mobile's acquisition of Orange Netherlands also contributed to the subscriber growth last year, accounting for 2.2 million of the operator's total subscribers. (See FT Sells Dutch Assets, DT Goes Double Dutch for $1.9B, and DT Buys Orange Netherlands.)
In the U.K., T-Mobile recorded 406,000 net additions in 2007, bringing the total number of customers to 17.3 million. Of those customers, 2.1 million have opted for the Flext calling plan.
The operator also pointed out that 3.2 million subscribers in Europe were using the mobile Internet services via its "Web'n'walk" service.
