Smart Move by the CTIA
Like many of you, I suspect, I'm happy to see the show back in the Crescent City, rather than, say, Orlando, Fla. I think, however, the move from March to May is actually the really important aspect of this announcement.
Officially, the CTIA has this to say: "We decided to have the show in May after listening to our customers who wanted to use the show as an advantageous opportunity to launch products focused on back-to-school and fourth quarter retail cycles," notes Robert Mesirow, CTIA vice president and show director, in a statement. (See CTIA Show Moving to NOLA in 2012.)
Sounds reasonable for sure, but anyone who has done the tradeshow circuit recently knows that CES, Mobile World Congress and CTIA are presently bunched too close together and are presumably all chasing the same marketing money. In particular, having MWC in February followed promptly by CTIA in March was making less and less sense to me.
I think a move to May should give the global mobile industry a bit more breathing space between these two major shows.
