SA Forum Offers New Interfaces

PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Service Availability™ Forum (SA Forum), the leader in developing open specifications for carrier-grade service availability, today announced the availability of new and enhanced interfaces representing the complete set of SA Forum specifications. System management interfaces are available for the first time, in addition to updated releases of the Hardware Platform Interface (HPI) and the Application Interface Specification (AIS).

“With this release, we have consolidated the architecture, appearance and interfaces in the specifications which make the specs more user-friendly in addition to new features,” said Tim Kober, president of the SA Forum. “This release provides the industry with a set of specifications that work together, are backwards compatible with each other and are a complete set of interfaces for service availability. Numerous improvements have been made in the specifications to make them fit and work together better.”

New Systems Management Interfaces

The new systems management interfaces are SNMP-based interfaces that provide distributed monitoring and control access to AIS and HPI management functionality. Through these interfaces the data as well as the management operations available from each specification can be accessed. Additionally, they also contain event and error reporting for AIS services and HPI. The interfaces allow the implementer to make utilization decisions based on their current management application infrastructure and needs, while allowing for evolution of and melding to more advanced management models and tools as they emerge in the marketplace.

New Features for HPI and AIS

For the first time the specifications incorporate a SA Forum System Model. The system model includes a new service, the Information Model Management (IMM), which enables the storage and manipulation of relevant parts of that system model. IMM is also the basic interface to use by SNMP to provide access in the management domain.

The SA Forum also added extensions to the Availability Management Framework in order to support the concept of a SA Forum application as well as administrative operations that enable the invocation of various management operations on objects which are controlled by the Availability Management Framework. Additionally for all existing SA Forum services, a set of notifications and alarms were added to convey various incidents involving the state of the services as well as for objects under the control of these services. New specifications for Logging and Notification are other enablers that give better management control of a SA Forum implemented clusterware.

SA Forum and PICMG Release HPI-to-AdvancedTCA Mapping Specification

The SA Forum has also released the HPI-to-AdvancedTCA Mapping Specification. The mapping specification details how the SA Forum’s HPI maps to PICMG’s AdvancedTCA specification. By standardizing how the two specs should be implemented together, the mapping specification gives developers a standard method to access functionality in both specifications, thereby saving companies time, money and resources.
