Euronews: Does Slim Want All of KPN?

KPN Telecom NV, América Móvil S.A. de C.V., Etisalat and Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. lead the way as we start another week of regional news.

  • America Movil, the ambitious operator owned and run by the world's richest man, Carlos Slim, has terminated an agreement that caps its stake in Dutch national operator KPN at 30 percent. America Movil is already KPN's single biggest investor following an M&A raiding party earlier this year that saw Slim secure stakes in KPN and Telekom Austria. Now Slim is free to increase further his stake in KPN, a move that could trigger a mandatory offer for the whole company. The move comes only days after the Dutch operator announced plans to sell its German operation, E-Plus Service GmbH & Co. KG to Telefónica Deutschland. (See Euronews: KPN to Sell E-Plus for €8.1B and Euronews: Slim Takes a Breather.)

  • Whether Slim approves of the E-Plus sale or not could be a moot point if German authorities block the sale. German Business Minister Philipp Rösler has raised concerns that the merger of E-Plus and Telefónica Deutschland could negatively impact competition, reports Handelsblatt.

  • Megafon has been given the go-ahead by Russian regulators to acquire fellow 4G service provider Scartel, best known for its Yota operation. The two operators had already teamed up for 4G service rollout. See this Reuters article for more. (See MegaFon, Yota Team for LTE in Russia.)

  • Etisalat has struck a deal to promote Samsung's smartphones and tablets across its 15 operating markets in Africa, the Middle East and Asia/Pacific.

  • Service broker specialist OpenCloud Ltd. is integrating an enterprise applications platform from partner Gintel A.S. onto its marvelously-named Rhino Platform. OpenCloud says the "joint proposition was driven by a European Tier-1 operator customer that had already deployed the Rhino platform, and has now chosen to deploy the Gintel solution on its existing platform." For more details, see this press release.

I wonder if Mr Slim is wondering if KPN was the best European investment option after all?
