Ethernet Expo: Europe 2009 Preview

Stan Hubbard
4/30/2009

During last October's Ethernet Expo in New York, a senior official at one of the world's largest telecom operators opined that carrier Ethernet is recession-proof because it offers so much value during a time in which everyone is looking for more performance without additional cost. While Ethernet services and network equipment revenue growth rates generally have slowed in recent quarters, there is no doubt that carrier Ethernet remains today's technology of choice for building converged networks capable of affordably supporting a wide variety of enterprise, residential, and wholesale services and applications.

Just how recession-proof is carrier Ethernet? And how can enterprises and service providers benefit most from Ethernet solutions? These are just a couple of the key questions that will be addressed at Ethernet Expo: Europe 2009, which will be held at the ExCel Conference Centre in London from May 13 to 14. As chair of Light Reading's Ethernet Expos, I am pleased to share a preview of this year's show.

Attendees: Light Reading has thus far received event registrations from service provider, enterprise, media, and other professionals in 23+ countries on multiple continents. We currently anticipate several hundred industry participants – including key movers and shakers – will be attending the sessions and walking the exhibit floor. If you have not signed up yet, keep in mind that registration is free for qualified service providers, enterprises, journalists, and analysts. This represents an extraordinary networking opportunity you will not want to miss.

Global Interconnect Demonstration & Vendor Showcase: We are particularly excited to introduce the industry's first live global Ethernet services interconnect demonstration, in partnership with Iometrix Inc. , the MEF , Colt Technology Services Group Ltd , Virgin Media Business Ltd. , and Tata Communications Ltd. . Iometrix President Bob Mandeville has spearheaded the effort to integrate multiple demos. These include a live intra-European circuit carrying videoconferencing services with real-time quality checks, and as well a live global circuit of linked MEF14-certified services that spans from London to Los Angeles to Singapore to Chennai, India, and back to London. An adjoining Vendor Showcase offers a closeup view of next-generation implementations of protocols and services from multiple interoperating vendors, including Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU), Cisco Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: CSCO), Creanord Ltd. , Matisse Networks , Omnitron Systems Technology Inc. , and Spirent Communications plc .

Ethernet Service Provider & Industry Forum Keynotes & Presentations: We have assembled a Who's Who list of senior industry experts from the MEF, MultiService Forum , and 15 leading service providers that are taking carrier Ethernet to new heights and working together in unprecedented ways to unleash its benefits throughout the world. Keynote speakers include Nan Chen of the MEF, Alireza Mahmoodshahi of COLT, Dr. Kamran Sistanizadeh of Global Cloud Xchange , Steve Best of BT Wholesale , and Matthew Finnie of Interoute Communications Ltd. . Senior experts from the following operators will also be presenting: AboveNet Inc. (NYSE: ABVT), Cable and Wireless plc (NYSE: CWP), euNetworks Group Ltd. , KDDI Corp. , KPN Telecom NV (NYSE: KPN), Masergy Communications Inc. , ntl:Telewest, Telefónica SA (NYSE: TEF), Tata Communications Ltd. , Verizon Enterprise Solutions , and XO Communications Inc. .

Enterprise End-User Workshop & Sessions: Much of the service provider presentation content will focus on next-generation Ethernet services and Ethernet-access-based applications targeted for business customers. But in addition to this, we have added a Carrier Ethernet Enterprise Workshop on Day 1 that will provide an overview of the different types of Ethernet connectivity services and applications and highlight how they can be tailored to meet the needs of particular industry verticals. We are also pleased to have experts from HSBC Holdings plc , the Camden Borough Council, and Thomson Reuters participating in an enterprise end-user roundtable.

Carrier Ethernet Network Technology Sessions & Exhibit Hall: More than 20 carrier Ethernet network solutions vendors will be exhibiting and/or presenting during a mix of debate, success stories, and think-tank sessions covering a full range of business services, consumer video services, packet optical, mobile backhaul, and Ethernet access topics. These include Platinum Sponsor ANDA Networks Inc. along with ADVA Optical Networking (Frankfurt: ADV) , Alcatel-Lucent, Canoga Perkins , Cisco, Creanord, Ethos Networks Ltd. , EXFO (Nasdaq: EXFO; Toronto: EXF), Hatteras Networks Inc. , JDSU (Nasdaq: JDSU; Toronto: JDU), Juniper Networks Inc. (NYSE: JNPR), Matisse Networks, Spirent, Tejas Networks India Ltd. , Transmode Systems AB , Fluke Networks , IMC Networks , NetScout Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: NTCT), Omnitron Systems Technology Inc. , Overture Networks Inc. , and Transition Networks Inc. .
