Clearwire Goes Muni

5:55 PM -- With all the focus on Clearwire LLC (Nasdaq: CLWR)'s mobile WiMax future plans, it is easy to forget that the operator already has pre-WiMax networks in many smaller towns in the U.S.

Indeed, you can even find the operator taking scraps from the muni WiFi table at times. Case in point, Clearwire is coming to Milledgeville, Ga., on October 31, 2009.

Milledgeville ended up picking Clearwire to cover its muni network, rather than traditional mesh WiFi vendors, for one good reason, city planner Russell Thompson tells The Colonnade.

"We put out a bid under the WiFi ideal and got a couple of responders that didn't work out because of their financial viability," Thompson said. "WiMax runs over a licensed spectrum, and it just so happened that Clearwire owned the spectrum covering Milledgeville."

Always helpful!
