BT's WiMax Musings

8:40 AM -- BT Group plc (NYSE: BT; London: BTA) continues to look at WiMax, according to Dave Hughes, director of wireless broadband at BT Retail, but device availability is a key factor in the operator’s plans for the wireless broadband technology. (See BT Wants WiMax and BT's Italian WiMax.)

“The most important thing for us is the device,” said Hughes, speaking at the Mobile Broadband Congress in London last week. “WiMax gets interesting for us when there are as many WiMax devices as there are WiFi devices out there. And we think that’s not for some years to come.”

The U.K. operator is expected to take part in the upcoming 2.6 GHz mobile broadband auction, but Hughes did not reveal any plans for acquiring spectrum. (See UK WiMax Faces Spectrum Fight and Brits Kickstart Broadband Spectrum Offer.)
