Cable operators aren't the only ones jacking up their broadband speeds these days. BellSouth Corp. announced plans Mon. to introduce a premium DSL tier this fall that will deliver data download speeds of up to 6 Mbps. Pricing plans weren't disclosed.
Known as FastAccess DSL Xtreme 6.0, the new service will be twice as fast as BellSouth's current top-line DSL product, which is called FastAccess DSL Xtreme. With the launch, BellSouth will feature four different levels of DSL service, with downstream speeds ranging from 256 kbps to 6 Mbps. The Bell will also match, if not exceed, the top download speeds of most MSOs.
At the Supercomm trade show in Chicago, BellSouth also announced plans to launch a wireless broadband service in Athens, Ga. in August. The telo intends to expand the pre-WiMax service to several unnamed Florida cities in the fall. No other details were revealed.
