NEW YORK — Light Reading has moved into the post-BobbyMax era.

BobbyMax, curmudgeonly author of more than 1,170 messages on Light Reading's boards since May 2002, has been "deactivated" for violating the site's Terms of Use.

Stunned, grief-stricken Message Monkeys are left asking: “Why?”

Here’s just a portion of what led to BobbyMax's banishment from the boards (parental guidance suggested):

You have stolen money from the donation boxes installed in many churches. You have no conscience. You have starved many people to death. Please stop killings and atone for you sins.

You are a damn bastard and the most stupid person on this earth. You have survived because of the generousity of Americans. You have fooled us all. You did number on us.

You are a sick person and mentally disabled person. You dumb salesman should have no contact with me.

For writing something stupid and knocking at doors to sell cookies. My posts are not wrtten for a low level person like you. I think you have sh*t in your mouth and the country suffers because of people like you.

You are damn dirty man with no literacy and class.
It seems that someone struck a nerve, and our Bobby, tragically, crumbled in his anguish. Always weird, yet ever provocative (see Searching for BobbyMax), his unique contributions to the art of English syntax left his legion of devotees with mouths continually agape. We here at Light Reading mourn the overthrow of this once great mind.

Donations may be sent to the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Institute.

”You have no interest in our heritage who is sell the dignity of our great attention.” – BobbyMax

— Larry, Monkey, Light Reading

BobbyMax was always an example of how lame the LR message board and the industry were becoming. Some of the non-sequiturs were funny, but the level of blatant stupidity quickly became tiresome.

We readers are pathetic losers for being sucked into visiting LR by their decision to can BM for going off the deep end. Heck, it worked on me!

I am pathetic for wasting my time on this post! And no beer in my fridge for me to cry in. Damn!

Shouldn't most of you be looking for WORK?

Yes, looks like LR is cleaning house. LR was hot for so long and now that they've cooled a bit, they're shaking things up. Maybe they think that a more focused and industry relevant message board will help with an image change? The editors themselves even seem to be less zany when they post on the boards, infrequently as it is.

re: B. Max R.I.P.
Well, well, well. BobbyMax has been banned from LR. Without question, Bobby has sparked more controversy and generated more interest in LR's message boards than anyone else - perhaps more than ALL other users combined.

On other forums around the web, a member in violation of message board rules is suspended for his first violations and then allowed back into the fold. Subsequent violations can lead to longer suspensions and, ultimately, permanent disqualification from the boards.

I am proposing that LR reconsider its position on BobbyMax. Perhaps a period of "pennance" is in order, with reinstatement possible at a future date. Or, LR can set up a poll asking its readers to decide Bobby's ultimate fate, i.e. 1) Dismissal, 2) Temporary Suspension, or 3) Forgive Him Now.

I'm also sorry to see Gea gone as well (if indeed he's also been banned and not just taking a break). All of a sudden LR is cracking down on their message boards' content? The boards are the only thing on the site that hasn't grown tired.

It seems to me that BobbyMax is quite beneficial to LR's bottom line; without him, chatter on the boards will go down measurably (once this thread dies down), and total action on the site will in turn suffer.

Peter, Scott, etal: how are things going there? I would have to think that traffic to the site is down in recent months as it seems that there's less advertising and I get popup ads whenever I visit (never had that happen until about 2 months ago - if I see another popup for Sylvan Learning Centers I'll SCREAM). Can you really afford to lose all those hits from BM's massive fan base?

I think you are discounting the level of sophistication of the folks watching TV like JerrySpringer show against tech folks who are well educated and often cynical (specially these days most engineers are cynical after all the empty promises they get/got from their companies). Most of the people are real and express their true opinions due to the advantage of anonymity.

And after I had promised myself I wouldn't do this.

I'm pretty sure that I'm not fake. Wait ... yes, I am not fake. But according to the hypotheis above, I must conclude that Doom must be fake.

Of course, if I wake up and it was all a dream, then I must be on Dallas ... or The Newhart Show.

:)

Do people honestly believe that the good folks in the LR office have nothing better to do than to invent someone to put mostly non-technical (though certainly controversial) posts on a mostly business/technical discussion board?

And let this remind each of us to approach this whole thing with professionalism, not take things personally, and most importantly be careful that what we say does not give offense.

Live shows on radio and television used to have fake people calling in to put some oil in the fire and trigger the normal audience to call back and complaint about that fake person comments.

Apply it to message boards and you get Light Reading.

Also, it is a rule in the internet industry to keep it secret when a message board member gets kicked out. For LR to start a thread on BobbyMax is pushing the joke a bit too far.

It has been nearly 3 months since we have not read his (or her) rebuttal to BM's rants."

"Dr." Gea was actually a causulty of LR censorship in his long campaign to cover BM's bases.
In response to a particular non-sensical BM diatribe, gea posted something that crossed the line. The message was deleted by LR, and gea has gone AWOL since.

How sad. I think screwjobs like BM and a few Huberitis on the Corvis board do more to drive away knowledge people like gea and zettabit, thanks to LR.

This was the BM post that ultimately killed gea. I guess all of gea's bases are belong to BobbyMax.

Some people will miss BM. Although his posts were on most occassions derogatory, anti-establishment and without foundation, he was at least good for a laugh, don't you think?

Two things puzzle me about this decision:

1. It is so easy to set up a new alias that he'll be back I'm sure.

2. The editorial control of the message board seems to be really inconsistent. Firstly, there are many personal antagonisms on the board, sometimes posted with an offensive tone/language. Secondly, the messageboard thread often totally departs from any semblance of weighed discussion. See the recent postings about Headcount: Offshoring for some prime examples. This thread bordered on xenophobia and racial stereotyping in many messages.
