What, No 2.5 GHz?

4:30 PM -- Could the lack of certified 2.5 GHz infrastructure for mobile WiMax networks be another factor delaying the launch of Sprint Corp. (NYSE: S)'s Xohm service?

The carrier itself has blamed backhaul issues for the delay. Nonetheless, the lack of WiMAX Forum -certified mobile infrastructure and client devices can't be considered hugely encouraging as the operator gets ready to go commercial with WiMax.

The WiMax Forum said today that it has certified four base stations and four subscriber units for the 2.3 GHz band. Units that can be used with 2.5 GHz will be ready "in the coming months," according to the industry body. (See Mobile WiMax Marks Milestone.)

No doubt, Sprint has been using pre-certification kit for a while now. Still, its pretty clear that certified interoperable 2.5 GHz mobile WiMax gear won't have been available for Sprint's original April launch date. (See Sprint Quiet on WiMax Launch Date.)
