Welcome to Camp CES
Ah yes, ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Las Vegas and "Camp CES" for the pure pleasure of being herded around for nearly two hours just to watch Bill Gates burble on (again) about the Connected Home, or whatever Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) is calling it this year.
I don't know if it was the sheer size of the crowd this year or just poor planning that led to the massive horde of press people being crammed together like cattle for so long. I can tell you, however, that some members of our treasured fourth estate could do with a little more research on deodorant.
When people kept on trying to push their way ahead before the escalator, I seriously considered whether Gates was really worth a blackened toe or worse. But I persevered and eventually made it to the "VIP and press area," only to find that the first five rows –- the only place from where I might be able to get a decent picture in the 60 seconds allowed for flash photography –- was reserved for some "technology innovator" group.
Laugh? I almost did. And I can't imagine it was much fun either for members of the general public that waited to see the great man for themselves.
