2:20 PM -- Federal Communications Commission (FCC) chair Kevin Martin has been named "Porker of the Month" by Citizens Against Government Waste after spending $355,000 of taxpayer money to sponsor a NASCAR car, The Auto Channel reports:

Even though broadcasters have inundated viewers with DTV messages for the past several months, the group said, "Martin considered it necessary to use additional taxpayer dollars to pay for the car and driver to bear slogans such as ‘Is Your TV ready for Digital?'

Next up: The Department of Agriculture buys a video screen in Times Square. Or will Tiger Woods hit the course in FDA-sponsored gear next season?

The Auto Channel's article also noted that the car crashed during its first race last week... which you can choose to view symbolically or not. — Red Panda, Light Reading

re: Porker of the Month
I'm glad you and this taxpayer group pointed this out. The amount of "are you ready for digital?" advertising and promotion is ridiculous!! I would love to see real numbers on how many people are there watching TV from network's air signal only -- not cable or satellite. It has to be miniscule in this day and age; even the poorest and oldest among us don't use antennas only any more. And the TV network newscasts are doing their bits in a very 'product placement' seeming way, I wonder if FCC is making some sort of payments there....
