NXTcomm Preview: VOIP equipment

NXTcomm's almost here and the VOIP equipment space has never been busier. This week's announcements include new and updated softswitches, media gateways, and software for controlling calls.

Veraz centralizes node management
In an effort to target service providers with distributed networks, Veraz Networks Inc. (Nasdaq: VRAZ) has added some software smarts to its switching solution that will allow customers to manage multiple nodes from a central location. (See Veraz Enhances Nodes.)

The ControlSwitch allows customers to enable routing and software upgrades and add new services centrally rather than manually at each individual node. The ControlSwitch uses a distributed architecture based on commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) equipment, rather than proprietary hardware. As a result, Veraz says it can provide cost-effective management of its disparate regional switching nodes.

Genband moves up and out
Genband Inc. announced a couple of new media gateways designed to move it upmarket and out into the field.

The company's new G9 Converged Media Gateway, which it considers the first second-generation media gateway, scales up to tens of thousands of ports and supports a wide range of wireline and wireless network interfaces. (See Genband Intros Gateways.) The key takeaway here is that this is Genband's reinvention of the Santera 8000 product, which it acquired when it bought Tekelec 's switching business. That gateway had more than 26 million ports installed since 2001, Genband says, and this new G9 platform will be used in its place to support all new converged growth.

Also new in the Genband camp is the G2 Compact Media Gateway. This little thing is a compact and hardened gateway for deployment in remote locations, including outdoor cabinets, which should give operators more choices for how they migrate their networks to VOIP.
