No More Morse

4:30 PM -- From The Philter's "What's the World Coming To?" file, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) said yesterday it will no longer require amateur radio operators to be proficient in the art of dots and dashes. The press release spells it out:

Prior to today’s action, the FCC, in accordance with international radio regulations, required applicants for General Class and Amateur Extra Class operator licenses to pass a five words-per-minute Morse code examination. Today’s Order eliminates that requirement for General and Amateur Extra licensees.

At a whopping five words a minute, just getting a transmission of this post would have taken you about 20 minutes. Believe me, your time's better spent doing something else.
