Is Verizon a Cable Company?

5:40 PM -- Perhaps no other telecom service provider's roots are more telco than Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE: VZ). Its legacy is a Who's Who of telco -- C&P Telephone, NYNEX, GTE, to name a few. But recently, Verizon is decidedly moving in cable's direction.

Take FiOS TV -- it's more cable than IPTV. It uses Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA) . Its new whiz-bang set of interactive widgets, including Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube integration with the TV, are built on OCAP and Enhanced TV Binary Interchange Format (EBIF) platforms -- both products of CableLabs .

Heck, what's next for them? A board seat on the National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA) ?

Regardless of platform, it's good to see this telco TV leader step up its interactive game. And the reality of today's competitive landscape contributes to a blurring of service provider lines -- telco and cable alike are becoming platform agnostic. I can't wait to see that first Cox-branded smartphone operating on a Cox-built LTE network.
