Where Is the PSTN to All-IP Journey Going?

Light Reading

With a few notable exceptions, most wireless operators have yet to complete the migration to an all-IP network, and it's a process that -- while necessary -- is far from simple.

According to Heavy Reading analyst Jim Hodges, the business case for migrating to IP has traditionally been hard to quantify, and converged operators tend to see more revenue potential in mobile than fixed network transformation. What's more, he says, there is still life in TDM legacy services such as POTS and 800/888. (See Powerful Attraction: Utilities Still Love TDM.)

That said, fixed network operators realize they need to replace their TDM switches since in many cases they're obsolete. So the question becomes, how do they go about doing it?

In the following infographic from Siemens AG (NYSE: SI; Frankfurt: SIE), the vendor outlines why the New IP matters and breaks down three different approaches that may be part of an operator's roadmap to the all-IP future.

TDM Replacement: Skip the Network, Embrace the Cloud
Why oh why would you rebuild a voice network when there are better ways forward?

Service providers are being asked to rebuild a voice network all again with IMS NFV technology, piece it all together over the next several years and chase a smaller revenue pie.

Here are few blog posts on that topic:
