Service control supplier Ellacoya Networks Inc. introduced a new voice-over-IP (VoIP) software package for its switching platform. The solution, available with the company's 5.8 software release, offers deeper packet inspection capabilities for SIP, H.323 and MGCP applications. This way, the Ellacoya IP Service Control System can identify, classify and prioritize these applications on a per subscriber and VoIP provider basis. Using the solution, for example, a cable operator could create new revenue streams by selling quality-of-service (QoS) enhancements to independent VoIP providers like AT&T or Vonage, or directly to their subscribers. Alternately, MSOs could provide QoS for their own SIP-based services. Ellacoya is able to provide this functionality directly through its switches or by supporting a standards-based PacketCable Multimedia (PCMM) implementation. In the later case, Ellacoya's product would serve as a PCMM application manager and communicate with a PCMM policy server to manage QoS through DOCSIS CMTSs.
