Cox Preps Multi-Room DVR

3:45 PM -- Carrying forward a theme that emerged at last week's cable show, Cox Communications Inc. said it plans to launch a whole-home DVR product later this year that taps into a new interactive program guide the MSO has developed in tandem with NDS Ltd. (See Cox Gears Up for Multi-Room DVR, Cox Puts NDS at Heart of Tru2way Plan , and NDS Navigates Its Way Into Cox.)

But, like its attitude with wireless, Cox is remaining quiet about exactly when and where the multi-room DVR product will debut. The MSO did confirm that it will use Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA) to shuttle shows around the home network. (See Cable's Wild About Wireless.)

And that was just one of the big takeaways from last week's shows: U.S. cable evidently is done ceding multi-room DVR ground to Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE: VZ) and AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T), and expects to get the service off the ground in a big way as early as this year. And, not surprisingly, MoCA appears to be the home networking platform of choice for most of them.

We'll have much more about this in our upcoming show wrap-up, but here's a glance at some of the whole-home announcements that hit the wire during the show:
