Canoe Preps Interactive TV Ads

NEW YORK -- Nearly a decade after the cable industry began touting the potential of interactive TV, the nation's largest cable providers will soon kick off an ad campaign for Visa in which viewers will be able to request more information about the credit cards by pressing a button on their remote controls.

David Verklin, CEO of Canoe Ventures, which is backed by the six largest operators, said the company will name two to four national cable networks that will carry the commercials within two to three weeks.

"That product will go to the market within the next three weeks. It's a good sign that cable is getting out of the test mode and into deployment mode," Verklin said Monday at the Interactive Advertising Bureau's Digital Video conference.

Interactive credit cards ads while the nation is choking on a recession. These are good times.

Maybe a two-for-one on Big Macs would be more appropriate in these lean times.

7, you raise an interesting question.

How will DVRs affect Canoe apps?  For example, were the TV show recorded on DVR and then played back for viewing, would this Visa app work?  If not, could MSOs better enable Canoe apps in a network DVR environment?
