CableLabs has put its stamp of approval on a new technology that controls home recording of cable programming viewed on digital cable-ready (DCR) TV sets and other DCR devices.
The technology, jointly developed by Philips and Hewlett-Packard, is known as the Video Content Protection System (VCPS). It allows cable programming marked as "copy once" to be burned onto certain types of DVD+R and DVD+RW optical digital media.
Under the FCC's new Plug & Play rules, CableLabs may approve new digital outputs and recording technologies for use in one-way DCR devices. The approval extends to all DCR products built in compliance with these standards and regulations, as well as both one-way and two-way devices built to OpenCable specifications.
