Adelphia Taps Level 3 as VoIP Partner

Adelphia Communications is up for sale, but the situation has not stopped the MSO from fleshing out interim IP telephone rollout plans. At the end of February Adelphia selected Nortel as its PacketCable softswitch provider, and yesterday, the MSO announced a deal with Level 3 Communications. Through the latest pact, Level 3 will provide Adelphia with a wholesale residential voice solution called (3)VoIP Enhanced Local. The service provides Adelphia with outsourced PSTN interconnection, local number portability, E-911, operator assistance, directory listings, and directory assistance services. Other domestic Level 3 cable customers include Charter Communications, Comcast Corp. and Cox Communications. However, Cox and Comcast are only leasing network capacity from Level 3 to operate their own national IP networks.
