MORRIS PLAINS, N.J. -- Xtellus, a leading supplier of advanced ROADM technology for the metro and long-haul optical equipment markets, announced today that Dr. Dan Marom, an internationally recognized expert in wavelength-selective switching (WSS) technology and subsystems, has joined its Advisory Board and will be working closely with Xtellus’ R&D team in Israel.

Dr. Marom, pioneered in the research and development of WSS subsystems while working at Bell Labs and provided industry leadership in establishing WSS configuration and performance requirements. He has authored multiple papers on WSS technology and recently chaired a panel of experts on reconfigurable optical networking technologies at the 2006 Optical Fiber Conference. In October 2005, Dr. Marom joined the faculty of the School of Computer Science and Engineering of Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Israel.

“Xtellus unique WSS approach provides significant advances over existing implementations for optical networking operations, subsystem reliability and manufacturability,” commented Dr. Marom. “This was a major factor in my decision to join their Advisory Board and help them bring their WSS to market.”

Xtellus’ WSS program is based on Xtellus’ proven liquid crystal technology that is at the heart of Xtellus’ industry leading family of ROADM modules. Advantages for ROADM systems suppliers considering WSS solutions include:

  • Improved Manufacturability and Reliability – liquid crystal-based design overcomes manufacturing and operational limitations of other current approaches;

  • High Optical Path Capacity – one common port and up to eighteen input/output ports;

  • Bi-Directional Support –modules can be used in either direction;

  • Unique Platform Features – using the Xtellus common ROADM interface, the WSS design shares the same control and power interfaces as well as the same physical footprint as Xtellus’ proven commercial wavelength blocker products.
