WiMax: Still Big in Japan

5:55 PM -- Even as Sprint Corp. (NYSE: S)'s troubles cloud WiMax's future in the U.S. somewhat, the technology is still creating buzz in other parts of the world. (See Sprint Nextel CEO Steps Down.)

SoftBank Corp. says it will spend over $2 billion on WiMax if it wins a license for the technology in Japan. The company is bidding for one of two WiMax licenses planned by the Japanese government.

Like the existing U.S. wireless broadband spectrum, the Japanese WiMax spectrum will be in 2.5GHz band. As you'd imagine, Japanese vendors are already pushing ahead with cool lookin' WiMax phones. — Dan Jones, Site Editor, Unstrung
