James Blackley is the latest former Cablevision exec to be reunited with Tom Rutledge at Charter
James Blackley is the latest former Cablevision Systems Corp. (NYSE: CVC) executive to be reunited with Tom Rutledge, the ex-Cablevision COO who took the reins as Charter Communications Inc. 's president and CEO in February, Light Reading Cable has learned.
Blackley's new title at Charter could not be immediately confirmed, but multiple sources say he will take on a high-level operations and engineering role at Charter and report to Rutledge. Charter's current CTO is Jay Rolls, who joined the MSO from Cox Communications Inc. in July 2011, and will be staying with Charter, sources said. (See Cox Vet Jay Rolls Named Charter's CTO .)
Charter is expected to announce the hiring of Blackley as early as today. A Charter spokeswoman declined to comment.
Update: Charter announced the hiring of Blackley on Wednesday afternoon, appointing him to executive vice president, engineering and information technology. In this role, Blackley will head up Charter's Advanced Engineering and Information Technology teams. He starts immediately and will indeed report to Rutledge.
Charter confirmed that Rolls now reports to Blackley and that Rolls will remain Charter's CTO.
"Jim’s experience spearheading the rollout of industry-leading, innovative cable and Internet solutions will prove invaluable as Charter maximizes the full potential of our network architecture," Rutledge said, in a statement.
Blackley most recently served as EVP of corporate engineering and technology at Cablevision. He announced his resignation in March and stayed with the cable operator through May. (See Engineering EVP Latest Exec to Exit Cablevision.)
Blackley will be the fourth former Cablevision exec Rutledge has hired in eight months. These include John Bickham as COO; Scott Weber as EVP of network operations; Jonathan Hargis EVP and chief marketing officer; and Kathleen "Kip" Mayo as EVP of customer operations. And there are other big changes underway at Charter. The company announced earlier this month that it was moving its corporate headquarters from St. Louis to a new 70,000-square-foot building in downtown Stamford, Conn. (See Charter Makes Its Move .)
