MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- Tsunami Optics, a developer of innovative fiberoptic components tailored for emerging applications in the Metro/Access marketplace, today announced its first products and the direction of its first product line, as well as the addition of Optical Application Specific Integrated Chips (Optical ASICs) to its toolbox of technologies.

The introduction of Tsunami Optics’ family of Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM) products will enable equipment manufacturers to create flexible WDM systems with the right balance of cost and performance for emerging Metro/Access Networks. Specifically, Tsunami Optics is developing multiplexers, demultiplexers, fixed and fully-configurable (switchable) add/drop multiplexers for coarse WDM.

Dr. Timothy Brophy, Director of Optics Engineering for Motorola Broadband further commented, “It’s clear that networks are becoming more sophisticated, and that one limitation is availability of innovative components tailored for these new networks. Motorola Broadband is driving the evolution of innovative broadband access solutions and leading the convergence of the Internet, telecommunication and video entertainment industries. Tsunami Optics is addressing the right challenges with their CWDM product line.”

Tsunami Optics further announced that the company has begun development of products using Optical Application Specific Integrated Chips (Optical ASICs). These integrated diffractive optics use semiconductor lithography create components that manipulate light in many ways within a single integrated element. This technology enables Tsunami Optics to make highly integrated, heavily automateable fiberoptic components, tailored for the emerging Metro / Access market.

“Tsunami Optics is focused on removing complexity from fiberoptic components by integrating multiple functions into individual Optical Application Specific Integrated Chips.” said Jim Campbell, Chairman and Chief Technology Officer of Tsunami Optics. “This focus will enable Tsunami to create highly automated manufacturing of its innovative components. There are a wealth of systems companies creating the equipment to enable a bandwidth marketplace, and Tsunami Optics is bolstering their efforts by creating innovative components with exactly the right balance of performance and cost for the emerging Metro/Access market.”

According to Stephen Montgomery, President of ElectroniCast, “ElectroniCast is forecasting tremendous growth in the emerging Metro / Access market. There are a number of enabling technologies required to bring about that growth, including integrated optics. Tsunami Optics is correct to focus their energy and technology on the underserved Metro / Access market. We see tremendous potential here.”
