T-Mobile Unveils Fastest 3G Android

T-Mobile US Inc. has introduced its first "HSPA+" phone, the High Tech Computer Corp. (HTC) (Taiwan: 2498) G2, which will be available for pre-order later this month.

LR Mobile exclusively revealed that a phone supporting T-Mobile's faster 3G network upgrade was on its way back in July. T-Mobile is running a site where you can sign up for updates on the G2 now. (See T-Mobile HSPA+ Smartphone Due in September .)

The phone, however, won't support the maximum speeds achievable on T-Mobile's 21-Mbit/s High-Speed Packet Access Plus (HSPA+) network upgrade. The carrier says that the phone has a "theoretical peak capability" of 14.4 Mbit/s. This will translate to average download speeds in the 2 to 5 Mbit/s range.

This means that the G2 will still be one of the phones with the fastest connections available in the US. It should rival the Sprint Corp. (NYSE: S) Epic and Evo WiMax phones for average download speeds. (See Sprint: An Epic Win?, Sprint's EVO Launch Creates Buzz & Mixed Crowds, and T-Mobile's HSPA+ Rivals Clearwire, US LTE Speeds.)

The phone features an 800MHz Snapdragon processor, the ability to record HD video, and an onboard Flash video player. T-Mobile describes it as "tightly integrated" with Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) Voice, so that new features, such as transcribing voice mails to text, are now available.

Indeed, T-Mobile is pushing the G2 hard as the upgrade to its first-ever Android phone, the HTC G1, which was launched in November 2008. The G2 will be available just as G1 users are finishing up their two-year contracts and looking around for upgrades.

re: T-Mobile Unveils Fastest 3G Android

Heavy Reading analyst Gabriel Brown told me a few days back that 14.4 Mbit/s HSPA is not actually considered HSPA+ that starts with 21 Mbit/s upgrade. So this is a 14.4 Mbit/s phone running on a network supposedly capable of 21 Mbit/s peaks, should we call it a HSPA+ device or something else?
