If imitation is indeed the sincerest form of flattery, satellite Internet providers are finally starting to applaud their cable brethren. ViaSat Inc. triumphantly announced this week that it shipped shipped its 100,000th DOCSIS-based two-way broadband satellite modem. A milestone for sure, but it is a pittance compared to the number of DOCSIS devices sold into the cable market. Indeed, cable vendors sell more than that every two days. Several satellite providers, such as WildBlue Communications in the U.S. and Telesat in Canada, have rolled out broadband Internet service using modified DOCSIS cable modem products from ViaSat. It's great news for rural consumers and small businesses which now have access to 1.5-Mbps Internet connections for as little as $50 a month.
