Lithuanian Telecom to deliver next-gen voice and data services based on Cisco 12000 Series routers
May 28, 2003
VILNIUS, Lithuania -- Cisco Systems (Nasdaq:CSCO - News) today announced that delivery to Lithuanian Telecom (AB Lietuvos Telekomas) for deploying a Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS)-based IP core network is complete. Using Cisco 12000 Series routers Lithuanian Telecom aims to respond to rapidly increasing demand from customers for high-speed Internet access and data connectivity in Lithuania. In the future this core 10-gigabit-per-second (Gbit/s) routing infrastructure will help underpin next-generation services such as video content delivery and Ethernet access.
Cisco and Lithuania Telecom are working closely with Cisco Strategic Alliance partner IBM Lithuania to deliver, provision and integrate the Cisco networking equipment. According to Lithuania Telecom, the Cisco solution helps allow it to address the business connectivity market today, and offer new services to the residential market in the future. The Cisco 12000 Series router will help support the expansion of Lithuania Telecom's service offerings throughout the country. As the network grows, Lithuania Telecom will be able to better protect its investment in the upgradeable, modular switch fabric of the 12000 Series.
"Lietuvos Telekomas has several years of experience in using Cisco technology for datacom networks, and we have been quick to use the advantages of the development that Cisco has invested into its core routing platforms," said Harri Suokko, director of services development, Lithuania Telecom. "Our key criteria for selection was to find a reasonably priced 10-Gbit/s-capable MPLS-based IP core network which we can expand on an ongoing basis minimizing the need for forklift upgrades in the future."
