Deutsche Telekom's 'open RAN' plan slips after Huawei reprieve
Deutsche Telekom had promised 3,000 open RAN sites by the end of 2026, but the date has now been changed to 2027. And Germany's refusal to ban Huawei has implications.
Optical vendor Xtera will demonstrate unrepeatered 100G at 500 km, among other plans for next month's OFC 2014 in San Francisco.
February 26, 2014
DALLAS -- Xtera Communications, Inc., a leading global provider of optical networking solutions, will be present at OFC 2014 with a live 100G unrepeatered transmission demonstration over 500km fiber length on the exhibit floor, two papers, and participation in a 100G workshop. OFC 2014 is the world's leading event for advancing optical solutions and will be held on 9-13 March 2014 in San Francisco, California, USA.
Throughout the exhibition in Corning’s booth (#3853), Xtera will demonstrate an unrepeatered 100G transmission on 500 km of fiber with industrial margin for cable repairs using Xtera Raman amplification technology and Corning SMF-28 ULL optical fiber. This combination offers network design flexibility in high-capacity backbone networks for intermediate site skipping, minimization of regeneration site, and transmission of higher channel rates and new modulation formats. Xtera Raman solution and Corning SMF-28 ULL optical fiber offer a future-proof solution for long-haul terrestrial networks.
Both Xtera’s papers will be delivered on Tuesday 11 March in the Field Trial Demonstrations and Modulation Formats session:
Paper Tu2B.1 – Tiejun J. Xia (Optical Technology Planning, Verizon) will present the paper entitled Transmission of 400G PM-16QAM Channels over Long-Haul Distance with Commercial All-Distributed Raman Amplification System and Aged Standard SMF in Field, and co-authored by Xtera. The result shows that Xtera’s commercial Nu-Wave OptimaTM optical networking platform enables the effective transport on genuine long distances of high-capacity channels made of multiple 16QAM carriers in deployed long-haul fiber networks.
Paper Tu2B.2 – Do-il Chang will talk about a 150 x 100G field trial over 1,504 km using all-distributed Raman amplification with 61nm optical spectrum and with excellent transmission performance in field conditions.
On Thursday 13 March, Herve Fevrier will participate in the 100G Deployment on Submarine Links panel (Panel Th1B). The workshop will cover the views of global system operators, transmission equipment manufactures and turnkey system suppliers about the unique set of challenges in deploying spectrally efficient high bit rate transmission technologies on the longest reach among all optical transmission links presented by subsea cable systems.
Xtera pioneered Raman optical amplification in backbone networks with the installation of Raman amplifiers with a 100nm optical spectrum in commercial terrestrial networks in 2004. Xtera was the first supplier to introduce Soft-Decision Forward Error Correction (SD-FEC) in a 100G commercial network in 2011. In April 2013, Xtera launched the industry’s first optical repeater featuring Raman amplification for long-haul subsea cable systems. More recently, in December 2013, Xtera introduced the XWDM solution that makes possible a [Capacity x Reach] metric which exceeds, by a factor of six, what is normally achievable by today’s 100G optical transport systems that use Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifiers (EDFAs).
