RBN's Not Dead
But it's Sorrento's property now
4:40 PM -- Here's another bubble-era optical survivor I wasn't aware of: Redfern Broadband Networks, also called RBN Inc.
Whatever was left of RBN is now in the hands of the new Sorrento Networks Corp. Terms weren't disclosed, but Sorrento said this morning it's picked up 100 percent of RBN's assets. (See Sorrento Buys Optical Assets.)
Redfern was an Australian company that was founded in 1999 and ended up raising at least $45 million. (See Redfern Broadband Raises $28M, RBN Rakes in $11M, and RBN Closes $9.5M Round.) Its flagship product was the GigaEdge, a DWDM provisioning platform.
By the way -- RBN isn't the same as Redfern Integrated Optics Inc. (RIO) , an optical components company that's still kicking. (See Redfern Raises $7.5M.)
"Asset sale" often implies the company was shut down, but a Sorrento spokeswoman says RBN was "in full operational mode" with about a dozen employees. Some of them will join Sorrento, presumably continuing to work in Australia, and RBN CTO Ross Halgren will be consulting with the new parent company.
