BALTIMORE, Md. -- Nufern, the largest independent provider of application-specific optical fiber, announces tighter specifications for its planar waveguide and select cut-off single-mode 1060 nm fibers. Designed to improve performance and reduce manufacturing expenses, these extra high-performance (XP) fibers provide improved optical and geometrical tolerances with a clad diameter of ñ 0.5 æm, a coating diameter ñ 10 æm, and a core-clad concentricity of < 0.3 æm.

"When we launched our high-performance (HP) series of fibers some 18 months ago, our goal was to develop and produce products that exceeded industry standards in reliability, repeatability, and performance," says Nufern Director of Business Development, Bryce Samson. "Our XP line is a continuation of that vision. In today's market, customers demand the highest performance products possible. In addition, because of the higher tolerance yields these fibers offer, customers can relax some of their manufacturing specifications which translates into lower manufacturing costs."

In a separate release:

Nufern, the largest independent manufacturer of application-specific optical fiber, introduces a general purpose Ytterbium-doped (Yb) polarization maintaining (PM) double-clad fiber for applications requiring low-cost fiber laser and amplifier sources, such as laser marking, pumps for fiber amplifiers, and IR sources for frequency doubling. This double-clad fiber features an industry standard 125 ?m format and Panda-style stress elements. The fiber is designed for ease of handling, including splicing and cleaving, and has photosensitive properties similar to SMF28TM that allow Bragg gratings to be written directly into an active fiber.

"The general purpose nature of this double-clad fiber makes it an ideal choice for applications where cost and compatibility are an issue," says Nufern Vice President of Sales, Vinnie Rodino. "The fiber's telecom-type geometries are compatible with the low-cost pump diodes and fiber-based components now available on the market. And as a double-clad product, the fiber offers an alternative to our large-mode-area (LMA) series of fibers, which are designed for high power applications. By designing a lower cost, double-clad fiber, with similar handling properties to standard transmission fiber, we can provide customers with a cost effective means to double-clad technology."

Nufern's PM-YDF-5/125 fiber has a core diameter of 5.5 æm, clad diameter of 125 æm, birefringence of 3.0 x10-4, and a cladding NA of 0.46. The fiber is also available in a non-PM version.
