IRVINE, Calif. -- Newport Corporation announces the introduction of the AutoAlignTM MODAL – a modular system for performing alignment and metrology of fiber optic components, including planar waveguides, AWGs, fiber collimators and various other devices. In its simplest form, the AutoAlign MODAL is an economical entry-level version of Newport’s automated assembly systems ideal for early process development, prototyping and pilot production. In more comprehensive versions AutoAlign MODAL is a semi-automated fiber-optic component packaging tool. The AutoAlign MODAL uses the same mechanical and software interfaces as Newport’s fully automated assembly systems. Thus, it offers a direct upward migration path as users transition from the lab to the production floor, and preserves investment in process development and machine user interface as assembly requirements evolve.Key features and advantages include the following:

  • Highly Modular: The base system comes with a breadboard, three axis of automated motion, three axis of manual motion, a PC and Newport’s popular Integra™ Software. Functionality is further enhanced by a full portfolio of optional accessories including motorized cameras, machine vision; vibration isolated workstations, automated Epoxy delivery and UV curing, as well as Newport’s comprehensive offering of Test Instrumentation and Device Tooling.

  • Integrated Stages: The MODAL uses an integrated X, Y, Z motorized positioner with a very low optical axis height for superior alignment performance. The small stage footprint also enables the system to be confined to an 18X18 inch breadboard- making it ideal for any work space and ultimately lowering the cost-of-ownership for the customer.

  • System-Level Performance: Performance at the tool tip is ultimately critical in device alignment applications. The MODAL is capable of delivering less than 0.01 dB mechanical and alignment repeatability when aligning single-mode fiber to single-mode fiber.

  • State of the Art Integra™ Process Control Software: The MODAL utilizes the same control software as Newport’s fully automated assembly equipment. Therefore, the user will experience seamless transitions when upgrading and can be assured that custom development processes and sequences will not be lost. Newport’s Integra™ software is easy to use for manual operation, yet includes powerful sequence building for full automation capability, data management, and third party communication.
