Europe's annual ANGACable show opened its doors in Cologne on Tuesday, unleashing a torrent of announcements from operators and vendors alike.
At the top of the news agenda were the acquisition of Avinity Systems BV by ActiveVideo and the announcement by Harmonic Inc. (Nasdaq: HLIT) that South Korea's SK Broadband is using the vendor's cable modem termination system (CMTS) "bypass" technology to deliver IPTV services to cable subs. And it's clear from the rest of the show's news that enabling more sophisticated video services, faster broadband, and packetized voice are the primary concerns of Europe's cable sector as the battle against the region's telecom operators for double- and triple-play customers intensifies. Germany's largest cable operator, Kabel Deutschland GmbH , has deployed packet voice switches from Cedar Point Communications Inc. to provision VoIP services to its residential customers and to support its migration to PacketCable 2.0. The operator, which has just announced fiscal year revenues of €1.37 billion (US$1.9 billion) and struck a mobile service resale agreement with Telefónica O2 Germany GmbH & Co. OHG , has more than 9 million customers, of which 8.1 million are analog TV users, 849,000 are digital Pay TV users, 708,000 are broadband customers, and 710,000 use its voice service. 's CS 2000 IP Multimedia Softswitch and policy control server technology from Camiant Inc. to provision services such as video telephony, interactive gaming, and multimedia messaging as well as VoIP. The operator, which has 2.3 million subscribers, has also deployed video server technology, DVR capabilities, and MediaHighway set-top box middleware from NDS Ltd. , as well as a range of VoD technology from Harmonic, to help launch a host of new video services. (Nasdaq: VMED) has chosen its BSR 64000 Integrated-CMTS (I-CMTS) to support the British operator's ever-faster Docsis 3.0 broadband services. The vendor also unveiled a new video headend developed specifically for the delivery of high-definition (HD) services, and landed a deal to supply EuroDocsis 3.0 cable modems to Telia Stofa, the Danish cable operations of Scandinavian carrier Telia Company .
