BERN, Switzerland -- Swisscom is upgrading its mobile network even further in time for the World Economic Forum (WEF). The company is raising the data speed in central Davos to up to 42 Mbps. This will double data capacity, giving individual customers in the region higher surfing speeds.

Use of Swisscom's mobile network increases enormously at events such as the World Economic Forum. To avoid telephony and data transmission bottlenecks, the company has vastly expanded the capacity of its network in Davos and equipped transmitters with the latest HSPA+ technology. This will raise total capacity to a download speed of 42 Mbps and an upload speed of 5.6 Mbps, thereby doubling data capacity and giving individual customers in the region higher surfing speeds and allowing them to work as if at home. Mobile data transmission rates! this high are unrivalled in Switzerland and are still rare elsewhere in Europe.

The volume of data transmitted on the Swisscom mobile network has quadrupled over the past twelve months. This trend is set to continue given the increasingly widespread use of smartphones and laptops with mobile Internet access. The raising of the transmission speed for the WEF in Davos is in keeping with the continuing expansion of the HSPA+ network. The months to come will see this expansion continue in those places where data traffic volumes are highest, such as in tourist areas and business centres. Swisscom invests hundreds of millions of francs every year in its mobile infrastructure and is continually expanding its network.
