Nokia Siemens Networks has unveiled its 'Technology Vision 2020' that it says will enable mobile operators to "profitably deliver 1 gigabyte of personalized data per user per day" within the next seven years.NSN, which has undergone a major organizational revamp during the past two years, has long been talking about this "1 gigabyte" target but has only articulated its supporting vision alongside incremental product developments. Now it has unveiled a higher-level vision of what it aims to do to help mobile operators survive and thrive in a data-centric world. The six targets (pillars) NSN has identified, following consultation with its customer base, are to:
enable 1,000 times more capacity
reduce latency to milliseconds
teach networks to be self-aware
personalize network experience
reinvent telco for the cloud
flatten total energy consumption
The vision involves a number of buzzwords and terms -- including 5G and "cloudification" -- that may set off alarm bells amongst NSN-watchers. Light Reading will delve deeper into the pillars and report in more depth shortly.— Ray Le Maistre, Editor-in-Chief, Light Reading
