2:45 PM -- AMSTERDAM -- LTE World Summit -- Get ready, because Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. has big plans for wireless research and development.

"We're gearing up for a massive investment in the future," said Tim Watkins, Huawei's VP for Western Europe, speaking here at the LTE World Summit.

Watkins didn't attach financial details to indicate what "massive" means, but he described the company's newest R&D center that just opened in Shanghai last week to give some idea of the scale.

The building itself is the largest in Shanghai, with 350,000 square meters, according to Watkins, and it houses 10,000 of Huawei's 43,000 R&D engineers.

As for the technologies, Huawei's top three R&D priorities in wireless are Long Term Evolution (LTE), IP core infrastructure, and IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS)-related core technologies.
