Whether it's a health tracker, connected car, smart thermostat or home security system, connected devices are now interwoven into nearly every aspect of daily living. The sheer number of connected devices available is growing exponentially; in a report released in November 2015, Gartner predicted that over 6 billion connected devices will be in use in 2016, and that number will jump to over 20 billion in 2020.
We're already witnessing major shake-ups in the Internet of Things (IoT) market, evidenced by Cypress Semiconductor's announcement of plans to purchase Broadcom's wireless IoT group for $550 million. It's clear that the next few years will be a critical time for the expansion of the IoT as new devices emerge and service providers and enterprises carve out a slice of the market. Getting these disparate devices to play nice together is no small feat -- there's growing concern about IoT security, data privacy, network capacity, and the development of data and protocol standards to ensure interoperability. While 5G may provide a solution to some of these concerns, industry players need immediate answers to adapt for the coming onslaught of connected devices.
Today at 1 p.m. ET, Upskill U will tackle these tough IoT questions during IoT 101, an introductory course to our four-part learning module on IoT. Wednesday, May 11, 1:00 p.m. ET: IoT: Evolving Networks to Meet the Opportunity by Timothy Winters, University of New Hampshire InterOperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL). Winters will explain how operators' networks will need to evolve in order to address this diverse IoT opportunity, and will also address key questions as to how accelerating NFV and SDN will enable IoT configuration agility and smart service flexibility for vertical industries, as well as challenges in the transition to virtualization.
Friday, May 13, 1:00 p.m. ET: IoT: The Impact of Industrial IoT taught by Jim Kilmer, Verizon Enterprise Solutions .
