MUNICH -- Oman Telecommunications Company (Omantel) has awarded Siemens Information and Communication Networks (ICN) an order worth about 18 million euros. It covers the introduction of SS7 signaling technology over a next-generation overlay network with SURPASS hiS as well as the nationwide modernization of TDM switching systems with the latest EWSD software version. The contract also calls for maintenance of the systems and training of the personnel in Oman.

Modernization of the network will enable Omantel to offer its customers state-of-the-art voice and IP services. Installation of the overlay network will help meet the fast-growing demand for signaling capacity, for example as a result of data from the intelligent network (IN) and an increase in short message services (SMS) via wireless phones. The latest version of EWSD provides the carrier with a future-proof platform that will allow it to migrate simply and at an attractive price to a Next Generation Network. Around 280,000 EWSD ports are currently installed in Oman.
