FREMONT, Calif. -- Ikanos Communications, developer of Smart Silicon for Profitable Broadband(tm), today announced that Siemens (NYSE:SI), a leading supplier of global communications solutions, has selected Ikanos' SmartLeapTM family of Very High-Bit- Rate DSL Discrete-Multi-Tone (VDSL-DMT) chipsets to build a high-density line card for Siemens' acclaimed multi-service access product line SURPASS hiXTM.

Ikanos' programmable chipset allows Siemens to develop one integrated line card to deliver a comprehensive suite of services including voice, video, and data for global markets. Siemens will initially make the Ikanos-based access equipment available to carrier customers in Europe, where demand for VDSL-DMT is rapidly accelerating to meet requirements for triple play services.

"Siemens' set of performance criteria is widely known as the most stringent in the industry," said Dr. Hermann Rodler, SVP Solution Management Access of Siemens "The Ikanos chipset consistently met Siemens' rigorous test requirements with superior results. The Ikanos solution enables Siemens to offer our carrier customers the performance and reliability they demand to deliver multiple high-revenue services, while dramatically reducing deployment costs." With the VDSL line card, the SURPASS hiX product family allows now in a universal slot concept to mix and match ADSL, SHDSL and VDSL line cards in remote and central office shelves flexibly. This alleviates service rollout planning and inventory management for service providers substantially.

Services requiring bandwidths greater than 10 Mb/s per customer asymmetrically or symmetrically are now possible, opening the possibility for service providers to offer a host of new services to residential and business customers.

Smart Silicon for Profitable Broadband TM Ikanos' high-performance SmartLeap VDSL-DMT chipset supports symmetric and asymmetric applications. SmartLeap is the first solution to support multiple international VDSL-DMT standards for Europe, Asia, and North America, as well as ATM and Ethernet protocols with a single chipset. At speeds of 150 Mbps and distances up to 13,000 feet, the Ikanos VDSL-DMT chipset delivers the highest-speeds and the longest reach in the industry. Equipment vendors use Ikanos chipsets to develop end-to-end solutions for the lucrative Fiber to the Home (FTTH) and Fiber to the Premise (FTTP) Extensions, Multi-Tenant/Multi-Dwelling Unit (MxU) and Central Office/Remote Terminal (CO/RT) markets, while slashing time to market and lowering development, manufacturing, and inventory costs.

"Siemens' selection of Ikanos' chipsets is a testament to the accelerated demand for VDSL services in Europe," said Rajesh Vashist, president and chief executive officer of Ikanos. "Siemens has a solid footprint in the fast-growing European market, a region in which we envision to be a strategic growth area for Ikanos. We are pleased to have Siemens as a valued customer and look forward to further expanding our global presence."
