MUNICH -- Siemens IC Networks has been commissioned by China’s leading carrier, China Telecom, to upgrade the company’s optical network in Gansu. The new SURPASS hiT multi-service provisioning platform will in future allow China Telecom to offer data services based on Ethernet in the metro domain alongside traditional SDH-based voice services. The carrier will benefit from the clear competitive advantages offered by the solution being employed in China for the first time.

China Telecom will be using Siemens’ multi-service provisioning platform(MSPP) in Lanzhou, in the Province of Gansu. IC Networks is supplying its new Surpass hiT 7050 solution for this. It will allow the Chinese carrier to upgrade its SDH-based network to a convergent network for voice, with a sharply increasing data component. The future will bring new business opportunities for the carrier thanks to Ethernet services, which can be implemented alongside the SDH-based services with different classes of quality. For example, it will be able to offer Ethernet services with a guaranteed, flexibly adjustable bandwidth.

“The contract we’ve signed with China Telecom is the first order for our highly promising Surpass hiT solution in China,” said Thomas Ganswindt, Member of the Managing Board of Siemens AG and Group President of Siemens Information and Communication Networks. “So it marks a major step for us in terms of further strengthening our lead position in the optics sector there.”
