SAN JOSE, Calif., and ROTTERDAM -- Redback Networks Inc. (NASDAQ: RBAK), a leading provider of next-generation broadband networking equipment, today announced that German city carrier wilhelm.tel has deployed the Redback SMS™ 10000 platform of subscriber management systems in its multi-service broadband network. The SMS platform will enable wilhelm.tel to deliver fast, flat-rate Internet access, cable television/video-on-demand/radio and telephone services to about 28,000 households and businesses in the Norderstedt/Hamburg area. "In Germany, all subscribers expect the highest possible service quality for their telephone calls, pay-to-view films, TV output and Internet connectivity. To meet this expectation, wilhelm.tel's continued aim is to offer good value for money on a high performance, stable and easy-to-use broadband multi-service platform," said Herr Liebscher, chief technical officer at wilhelm.tel. "The SMS platform from Redback ensures proper visibility of our subscribers' activities and bandwidth requirements helping us create easily-accessible services, plan and predict customer bandwidth demand, and meet individual subscribers' changing demands on service offerings." Redback's SMS technology gives wilhelm.tel the ability to manage and groom high volumes of subscriber traffic, to provide secure, self-selection functionality and to maintain visibility of bandwidth and service requirements for each subscriber. wilhelm.tel's flat-rate multi-service package offers subscribers 2MB bandwidth 'always-on' connections upstream and downstream, with a premium-rate 4MB downstream option available for those customers wanting to subscribe to 'video-on-demand' films at broadcast quality. It is one of the first European networks to guarantee such high bandwidth to all subscribers in both directions, creating the need for a high-speed aggregation platform at the point where subscribers access wilhelm.tel's ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) core network before being routed towards the Internet.
