SAN JOSE, Calif. -- European end-user spending on security products, services, and PKI will grow 175% between 2002 and 2006, from $2.9 billion to $7.9 billion, according to Infonetics Research's latest study, User Plans for Security Products and Services, Europe 2002. Worldwide end-user spending on managed firewalls will grow 158%, and spending on auditing and vulnerability testing services will grow 616%. "The security market in Europe is experiencing a shift in technologies and methods that reflects a change in the way networks are built," said Jeff Wilson, executive director of Infonetics Research. "At most companies, the number of Internet connection points has increased exponentially requiring more complex security technology. Because of this, the security market has grown more quickly than the rest of the networking market over the last two years, and that growth will continue." User Plans for Security Products and Services, Europe 2002 is based on in-depth interviews with 300 purchase decision-making network managers at organizations in France, Germany, Scandinavia (Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden), and the UK. Sample data:

  • The fear of being hacked by outsiders is the leading factor that pushes respondents to buy security products and services

  • About half of the respondents have purchased integrated security appliances; enthusiasm for integrated security appliances ranges from a low in Germany of 47% to a high in the UK of 65% by 2004

  • Cost of services is the biggest barrier for those not buying managed security services Infonetics Research Inc.
