NEW YORK, October 24, 2003 — Heavy Reading (www.heavyreading.com), the market research division of Light Reading Inc., today published a comprehensive, worldwide market perception study covering the telecom operations support system (OSS) industry.

Titled the Heavy Reading Fall 2003 OSS Market Perception Study, the 55-page report is based on an exclusive, invitation-only survey of service provider and enterprise employees, which garnered 433 responses worldwide. The respondents, all familiar with the OSS market, gave their perception of 160 vendors (71 public, 89 private) in 12 product categories, identifying which names they recognize and which of them they consider market leaders in terms of price, performance, product quality and reliability, and service and support. Key findings include:

  • Brand awareness is generally weak in the OSS market. Only the biggest vendors in the OSS business are known by a majority of their prospective customers, and many small companies are known by less than 10% of the market.

  • Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE: HP) and Lucent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: LU) now hold leading mindshare positions in the OSS market. Lucent is the most recognized brand name in the OSS field, while HP received the highest market perception scores for price, performance, quality and reliability, and service and support leadership.

  • Some big names from the computing world are having trouble breaking into the telecom OSS market. Both Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) and Computer Associates International Inc. (NYSE: CA) scored well below market leaders in the OSS product categories they have targeted. Less than 40% of CA's prospective customers recognized it as a telecom OSS supplier.

  • Smaller OSS specialists are gaining significant mindshare from the market. Private companies Axiom Systems, NetCracker Technologies Corp., System Management Arts Inc. (Smarts), Telution Inc., and Core Networks Inc. all received stronger than expected market awareness and leadership scores in their respective product categories.

Purchasers of this survey gain access to a searchable database of all results, which can be sliced and diced according to geographic region, service provider type, respondent job category, and many other criteria. This enables:

  • OSS vendors to analyze their strengths and weaknesses in different market segments.

  • Investors and financial analysts to drill down on vendor credibility with customers.

  • Carrier management to identify which suppliers are likely to give them the best deal, not only on price but on other vital aspects, such as service and support.

The Heavy Reading Fall 2003 OSS Market Perception Study is priced at $2,950.For more information on this report, or to request a free executive summary, contact:
