SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Extreme Networks Inc. (Nasdaq: EXTR) and Avaya (NYSE: AV), a leading global provider of business communications applications, systems and services, have successfully completed testing of Extreme Networks' BlackDiamond(R) 12K switch with Avaya IP telephony solutions. The companies evaluated performance, scalability and resiliency of the switch in converged Ethernet networks using multiple switching domains and protocols.

The BlackDiamond 12804 was successful in all tested scenarios, interoperating with Avaya Communications Manager IP telephony software, Avaya Media Gateways and Avaya IP phones. As a result, the BlackDiamond 12804 switch was validated as compliant through Avaya's DeveloperConnection program -- an initiative to develop, market and sell innovative third-party products that interoperate with Avaya technology and extend the value of a company's investment in its network. Extreme Networks is a strategic member of the program.

The BlackDiamond 12804 switch passed 20 of 20 interoperability test scenarios. Highlights of the tests include:

  • Fast convergence and enhanced network resiliency and service recovery with Multiple Spanning Tree Protocol (MSTP) and multiple Ethernet automatic protection switching (EAPS) domains, in under 50 milliseconds.

  • Network scalability using Provider Bridging (standardized as IEEE 802.1ad) and Provider Backbone Bridging (being standardized as IEEE 802.1ah) to extend enterprise connectivity virtually across multiple locations. This test demonstrates preservation of virtual local area networks (VLANs) and traffic priority across multiple connected sites.

  • Quality of Service (QoS) for applications with interoperability of 802.p/Q priority packets at Layers 2/3, and VLAN support with 802.1x authentication for data and voice traffic.

"With these tests, the BlackDiamond 12804 switch is proven to deliver critical voice and data convergence with Avaya's world-class IP telephony solutions, enabling customers to build a resilient and reliable voice and data network," said Suresh Gopalakrishnan, vice president of marketing and product management for Extreme Networks. "Our open networking approach, consistent performance and the use of emerging technologies, including Provider Backbone Bridging for network scaling, provide valuable benefits as tested and proven with Avaya."
