Cisco Reorgs, Names Giancarlo CTO

A management shuffle puts Charlie Giancarlo at CTO, while former optical head Jayshree Ullal takes over security

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Cisco Systems, Inc. today announced changes to the technology organization under Mario Mazzola, Senior Vice President and Chief Development Officer. As part of the announcement, Charles H. Giancarlo was named to the position of Chief Technology Officer (CTO). The changes reflect Cisco's continued evolution to address customer needs, to capture new market opportunities, and to cultivate its current and next generation of leaders.

We also recognize the tremendous value Charlie will bring in contributing to and communicating more broadly Cisco's business and technology vision."

Mazzola announced the following changes to the Cisco technology organization:

  • Jayshree Ullal, senior vice president and 11-year Cisco veteran, will lead the newly-formed Security Technology Group, reporting to Mazzola.

  • Luca Cafiero, senior vice president and 11-year Cisco veteran, will lead the newly-formed Data Center, Storage, Switching, and Wireless Technology Group, reporting to Mazzola.

  • Tony Bates, vice president and general manager, will now have sole responsibility for the Carrier Core Multiservice Business Unit, reporting to Prem Jain and Mike Volpi, both senior vice presidents of the Routing Technology Group.

  • Kathy Hill, vice president and general manager, joined Cisco in 1997 and will now report to Mazzola, overseeing the newly-formed Mid-range and Stackable Switching Technology Group.

  • Kambiz Hooshmand, vice president and general manager, joined Cisco in 1996 and will now report to Mazzola, assuming new responsibilities leading the Optical and Broadband Transport Technology Group.

The remainder of Mazzola's technology leadership team will continue with their current roles and responsibilities.

Chief Technology Officer
As CTO, Giancarlo will be responsible for contributing to and communicating Cisco's technology strategy. In addition, Giancarlo will assume responsibility for the Global Government Solutions Group, while continuing to lead Cisco's voice and home networking businesses and serving as President of Cisco-Linksys, LLC. Giancarlo will report to Chambers and continue to work closely with Mazzola and his leadership team.

Giancarlo, 46, joined Cisco in December 1994 through the acquisition of Kalpana, Inc. Most recently Giancarlo served as the co-leader of network switching, one of Cisco's core technologies, and as the co-leader of several advanced technologies, including voice, storage networking and network security. Giancarlo holds an M.B.A. from Harvard and M.S. and B.S. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of California at Berkeley and Brown University, respectively.
