AT&T Outage in NY?

Whoops, it sounds as if AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) is having a little bit of local trouble on the wireless front. Apparently, the No. 1 U.S. cellular carrier is experiencing an outage in the greater NYC area, which could last eight to 10 hours -- according to our IT department.

PM Update: An AT&T spokesman called back to say that this "wasn't a big deal" and "only affected small pockets of people." He says the issue has now been resolved.

re: AT&T Outage in NY? AT&T spokesman I just talked to doesn't know about any outage in the area. He's checking it out.

re: AT&T Outage in NY? Heh, you wait a few hours for spokespeople and then two or three come along at once.

More details:

"A subset of AT&T customers in the New York area may have had difficulty in receiving incoming wireless calls between the hours of approximately 10 AM and 2:30 PM. In addition, a small percentage of customers may also have received duplications in SMS messages during that period. AT&T immediately dispatched a network team to investigate and the issue has been completely resolved for some time now."

He didn't say what caused it in the first place.
