NetLogic Microsystems announces industry’s first quad-port 10-GigE PHY for 10GBASE-LRM SFP+ and 10GBASE-KR backplane applications

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- NetLogic Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ: NETL), the leader in the design and development of knowledge-based processors and high-speed integrated circuits, today announced the industry’s first quad-port 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) physical layer (PHY) SerDes devices that deliver the highest performance and lowest power consumption for next-generation switches, routers and blade servers addressing the data center, enterprise networking, storage and service provider markets. NetLogic Microsystems’ new NLP2040 and NLP3040 PHY devices, targeted at SFP+ and 10GBASE-KR backplane applications, respectively, integrate its industry-leading electronic dispersion compensation (EDC), pre-emphasis on the 10G transmit lane and forward error correction (FEC) technology, respectively to support the IEEE 10GBASE-LRM and 10GBASE-KR standards.

The market for 10 Gigabit Ethernet PHY is growing rapidly in data center, enterprise and carrier networks, driven by the increasing demand for bandwidth-hungry video content and virtualization. Industry analysts expect the market for 10GbE PHY to grow tenfold in port count over the next five years, representing 58 percent CAGR over that period. To keep up with this growth in bandwidth, network managers are demanding networking equipment, server and storage systems with significantly lower power and smaller form factor that provide a higher density of 10GbE ports.

NetLogic Microsystems’ quad-port NLP2040 and NLP3040 devices offer power savings and footprint reduction over competing dual-port solutions, thereby allowing customers to develop higher density switches and blade servers for next-generation data centers. In addition, the NLP2040 and NLP3040 PHY devices offer an ultra low-power mode which allows customers to power down certain operations on chip to further reduce power consumption.
